The short version
Omegle shut down in November 2023 after fourteen years. Its founder, Leif K-Brooks, wrote that the stress and expense of fighting misuse of the site had become too much, and said there would be no comeback. The site was created in 2009, when he was 18, and was text-only at first. The full story, including the lawsuit that preceded the closure, is in our history of random chat.
Is Omegle coming back?
No. The original site is closed. Anything using the Omegle name or a similar one now is not run by the original team, and several of these copies have been set up to collect clicks, ads or personal details.
How to spot a fake Omegle site
- It asks you to sign up, install an app or enter a card before you can chat.
- It claims to be “the real Omegle” or “Omegle is back”.
- The page is full of pop-ups, forced downloads or redirects.
- There is no 18+ rule, no terms, no privacy policy and no way to report anyone.
What people used Omegle for
Mostly three things: a quick, anonymous chat with no profile; a way to practise a language or just talk; and an interest-based chat for people who wanted something in common. These are the things worth looking for in an alternative.
ChatAnony: the same idea with guardrails
- Same simple idea. Press start, meet someone new, skip when you like.
- No account. You chat under a random name.
- Text, voice or video. Pick the mode you are comfortable with.
- Interests. Add a topic for a better chance at a real conversation.
- Built for safety. 18+ only, reports on every chat, filters for abuse and for phone numbers, links and social handles, and a named Grievance Officer.
We are not Omegle, and we do not use its name or try to look like it. If you are comparing sites, read our guide to Omegle alternatives for what to check.
What has changed since 2023
Since Omegle closed, the expectation for anonymous chat has shifted. People now look for sites that publish their rules, confirm age, give clear ways to report and name someone who is responsible. Sites that skip these things tend to be the ones that attract the wrong crowd and disappear. That is the standard we hold ChatAnony to: you can read our terms, privacy policy and complaint process before you ever start a chat.
If you used Omegle for a specific reason
- To practise a language: use text chat and add the language as an interest.
- To meet people with the same hobby: add the hobby as an interest.
- To talk without a camera: use text or voice chat.
- To see someone face to face: use video chat and check what is in your background first.
Staying safe on any Omegle-style site
Whatever you use, apply the same habits: leave when you feel uneasy, do not share personal details, ignore links and requests for money, and report anything abusive. Our guide to what never to share is a good place to start.
Common questions
Why did Omegle shut down?+
Founder Leif K-Brooks said the stress and expense of fighting misuse had become too much. A lawsuit filed in 2021 had accused the site of a defective design, and the plaintiff's lawyer said the closure was a result of the mediation in that case.
Is Omegle back online?+
No. The original Omegle closed in November 2023. Sites using that name now are not operated by the original team.
What can I use instead of Omegle?+
Look for a site that is 18+, needs no sign-up, has reports and moderation, and lets you leave in one tap. ChatAnony offers text, voice and video on those terms.
